Steampunk longstrike by 3Dpoke Steampunk longstrike by 3Dpoke
This was a commission for a fellow deviantartist. This project was challenging in a number of different ways. First I had to make it so it would match her outfit, since its a cosplay piece it also needed to be light enough to carry around a convention and it also had to be sturdy enough to survive shipping. All in all it was still a blast to create.

Why on earth does it have a heatsink hanging off the bottom?

Why not? That's the beauty of steampunk. It doesn't have to make sense =)

Im sorry but I have to completely disagree with this. I think some people forget that steampunk is a fantasy setting no different than sci-fi or high medieval fantasy. The notion of flying airships or robots powered by steam or a gadget that run on impossibly complex system of gears is no different than being powered by some other imaginary energy source like magic.

There seems to be this elitist minority in the steampunk genre that feel that "my steampunk is better than your steampunk." Thats like saying "Im a more powerful wizard than you." honestly, whats the point? as long as everyone is having fun and we're all sharing our steampunk creations I see no harm in "just glueing some gears on it."

That's not the point at all.
Steampunk is a Victorian London inspired Sci-fi and not simply gluing stuff on it as long as it's brass.
But that's a different point entirely, the heatsink has no practical use except weighing the rifle down, making it harder to aim standing up.

Good eye sir. Yes I took an old heat sink and stripped away some of the blades. It looked too new for my tastes so I left it soaking in salt water for two days till corrosion started to sink in. Then I strapped it to the front of the gun using the mounting brackets normally used to hold the sink to the motherboard :)

Whoops, forgot follow up on this!

It was awesome! Really cool. I was with this person the whole time, and there were some pretty funny positive reactions.

Weapons check joking said they needed to "confiscate" the weapon.

People were like... "Ohhh!!! Steampunk rifle! PICS NAOW!"

At one point we let someone hold the gun for a second. Guy looked like he wanted to run off with it.

All in all, it was a fun experience and the rifle definitely caught a lot of attention.

Hehe, I'll ask her if it's ok to send you some pics. She plans on using it next year again or at other cons.

I dabble in leatherworking so I'm gonna see if I can make a rifle sling for it. This year I made a leather harness w/ shoulder and wrist armor for a Thief costume, so a sling shouldn't pose any issues.

I'll update ya on the final product :)

Oh that would be cool! I tried my hand at leather working and I failed miserably! been meaning to try it again but just haven't had the time. I'd love to see it when you're done with it!
